Earthquake in China Kills Thousands
By: Victor Quijano
An Earthquake in the south-western Sichuan province of China has killed about 32,477 citizens on Sunday, May 18,2008. There are also more than 220,ooo people injured. This is a moment in China’s history that will change it forever. So no one could hide from this magnitude 7.9 Earthquake.
During this Earthquake there were 145 aftershocks above a magnitude 4, 23 above a level 5, and the biggest at a level 6.1. With only about 34,000 medical staff members helping out, not everybody could be assisted in this crisis. About 181,460 tents were used a temporary homes and medical areas. Also about 220,000 quilts were givin to all injured people to help them out. Along with that, safe drinking water was restored to 7 million people.
There are some amazing stories of survival of people being rescued after being stuck under tons of rubble for hours and living. A man named Tang Xiong had a few bruises and was still alive after being trapped under rubble for 139 hours after the quake. Another person was a 53 year old man was pulled out of some rubble in Wenchuan county after 148 hours, it took 8 hours to save him.
The earthquake was so powerful that it could have been felt all the way in Singapore and the south eastern parts of Russia. The epicenter of this major quake also caused landslides. While rescue workers were doing there jobs they were halted by heavy rain which made it very difficult. Near where the quake was focused at, it was very lucky that the Nuclear Facilities and two Nuclear Weapon Facilties in Sichuan were not affected in a harmful way. Eventhough the epicenter of the quake was only located 60-145km or 40-90miles from it.
This is the Earthquake that shook China and destroyed many homes. It also changed the lives of many that had no where to live in there destroyed towns and homes. More information will be givin as the lives of many begin to be rebuilt.
